PECS, picture exchange communication system, communication books are used as a form of nonverbal communication for students with disabilities. These books come with multiple plastic pages lined with Velcro and many Velcro pictures of appropriate words for the student’s vocabulary. A sentence strip is also included to encourage the student to separate their sentence from the other pictures/words in their book. These communication books can be used in the classroom with students who have difficulty communicating verbally; mostly children with autism, but is not limited to. PECS helps the student to become independent and to express their needs and wants on their own, even if they cannot do it verbally. The pictures can help the student to start practicing the words as well by repeating after the adult who reads the cards, and help work towards verbally communicating the sentences they make on their sentence strip. PECS can be used with many different levels of autism and disabilities, both as a form of communication and as an enhancement of their communication.
